Pennsylvania Coal Company Gravity Railroad
The Pennsylvania Coal Company's Gravity Railroad was constructed in 1850 as a means to haul coal from Port Griffith to Hawley by the use of inclined planes that hauled a string of cars uphill. The cars would then coast down to the next plane. This was in use until 1885 when the Erie and Wyoming Railroad constructed their steam line in 1882. In several places the PCC and the Erie ran very close to each other.
