The Pennsylvania Railroad was formed in 1846 to connect from Harrisburg to Pittsburgh, It became the largest railroad by means of traffic and revenue. It was also known to create the standards in which other railroads followed and was known as the "Standard Railroad of the World" The PRR also electrified many of its lines through the years. in 1968 it merged with the New York Central Railroad to create Penn Central Transportation. Declaring bankruptcy in June 1970, the government created Amtrak in 1971. Eventually this was folded into Conrail. Today some segments are still in use as Conrail sold some sections off to other railroads.
