Scranton, Montrose & Binghamton Railway
Also known as:
Dalton Street Railway Company
Northern Electric Street Railway Company
Scranton & Binghamton Railway Company
This railway was an electric trolly that ran between Scranton and Montrose. The first section from Scranton to Dalton was completed in July, 1907 and was considered the birth of this line. It was later extended to Factoryville and the Lake Winola junction in 1908. The line was extended to Montrose in 1916. There were plans to extend this line to Binghamton but it was never constructed. Although the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western had a railroad through these areas, they were too busy with hauling coal and freight to handle passengers and light frieght. The line ceased operations in September, 1932 after existing for only 28 years. There are plans to develop parts of this old line into a rail-trail.
